Navigating the legal landscape of Indian logistics is mandatory for secure cargo movement. Nathaniel Air Express provides this definitive guide to help you understand the Government-mandated E-Way Bill system and the critical role of Transporter IDs (TRANSIN).
An Electronic Way Bill is a digital movement permit required under the GST regime. It is evidence that the movement of goods is documented by the Government. It must be generated before the shipment leaves the warehouse or home. It consists of two parts: Part A (Item Details) and Part B (Vehicle Details).
The Transporter ID is a 15-digit unique number issued by the GST Network (GSTN).
Crucial Note: Nathaniel Air Express does NOT provide these IDs. They are allotted by the Government to transporters who are not GST-registered. This ID allows a carrier to update vehicle details on your E-Way Bill without being a GST taxpayer.
It is legally mandatory to generate an E-Way Bill if the "Consignment Value" (Invoice + Taxes) exceeds Fifty Thousand Rupees. Moving goods above this value without a bill is a punishable offence under Section 122 of the CGST Act.
For any shipment crossing state borders (e.g., Haryana to Delhi), an E-Way Bill is mandatory regardless of the distance, once the ₹50,000 limit is breached.
Consignments below this value can have voluntary bills for enhanced security and tracking.
If a transporter is too small to have a GST number, the Government gives them a TRANSIN. This ID is used to link the cargo to the person physically moving it on the highway.
The sender (Consignor) fills Part-A (Product Info) and enters the Transporter ID. The transporter then uses this ID to fill Part-B (Vehicle Number). The bill is only valid when Part-B is filled.
If the truck breaks down or the cargo is shifted to a new vehicle, the Transporter ID allows the carrier to update the new vehicle number on the existing E-Way Bill without needing the sender's permission again.
Even if you are moving household goods (Personal Effects) while shifting homes, and the value is high, an E-Way Bill ensures that the police or flying squads don't harass the driver during transit.
E-Way Bills are time-sensitive. Usually, 1 day of validity is given for every 200km of travel. If the validity expires before the truck reaches Nathaniel’s hub, the Transporter ID is needed to extend it.
Failure to produce a valid E-Way Bill can lead to Seizure of Goods and Detention of Vehicle. Penalties can be as high as 100% of the tax amount or 2% of the value of goods.
